As a community...

  • Plant pollinator-friendly plants
Plants such as dandelions, clover, & other wildflowers are essential in the diets of bees & other pollinators. For a community initiative you can create a garden or a small area dedicated to creating food sources for pollinators, an area where grass can grow wild & wildflowers can grow in abundance, it might look a  bit messy but it will be colourful & bees will appreciate the effort!
You can also create bee nests & insect hotels in these dedicated areas!

  • Link up with local beekeepers
By linking up with local beekeepers you can educate your community more about the needs & requirements of bees

  • Create awareness!
Having community meetings or information evenings in your area can ensure that the wider community are getting more information about the importance of bees. It is also a good idea to try to educate local primary schools about bees so that they grow up knowing the services they provide to humans!

  • Eliminate use of pesticides
Try to eliminate the use of pesticides in your community by educating people & local gardeners about the adverse side effects that using pesticides & weedkillers have on bees & other pollinators.
Making homemade organic pesticides can also be a fun community project to undertake! Take a look at this article for some recipes for homemade pesticides & let us know if you try any of them out!

  • Contact your Councilors!

Get in touch with your County Council and let them know that your community cares! There are so many ways in which Councils can help by turning the sides of roads and roundabouts pollinator friendly. Check out this great video below from the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.
